JOB SEARCH? What's Important Now!
October 01, 2024
There are numerous opportunities, but how do you find the right job and successfully navigate the application process? This blog post is directed at all developers who can demonstrate at least some training and experience and are interested in employment at a promising company.
1. Where Do You Want to Work?
The first step on the path to your dream job begins with the question: Which company appeals to you? Take time to research companies that particularly appeal to you. These could be start-ups with flat hierarchies, established corporations, or companies with special values like sustainability. It's important that you can identify with the company's goals and culture, as this will influence your job satisfaction in the long term.
Tip: "Even if no suitable job posting is currently available, don't hesitate to apply proactively." Many companies appreciate proactive applicants who show genuine interest in their work.
2. Resume – The Showcase of Your Skills
A clearly structured and professional resume is the centerpiece of every application. As a software developer, you should ensure that your resume starts directly with your position, for example:
- Senior Web Developer
- Junior Backend Developer
Skills that aren't relevant to the job can be moved down or omitted. What's particularly important: Add your skills as a developer precisely and in detail.
Tip: Use templates from tools like Canva that offer attractive and clear designs. Make sure your core competencies and experiences are immediately visible. The design of your resume should also appear professional but modern.
3. Describe Your Skills in Detail
In the technical field, it's crucial to describe your skills concretely and in detail. Instead of just saying: I worked with JavaScript, you could write, for example: Experience in developing web applications with JavaScript, including Node.js and React. Implementation of complex API integrations for customer projects. This gives the company a clear picture of how deep your knowledge is in certain areas.
Tip: "Make sure to describe projects precisely. What exactly did you do?" How did you advance the team or project? This information should be formulated clearly and comprehensibly.
4. Link Relevant Projects
Do you have your own websites, open-source projects, or GitHub repositories? These are a valuable addition to your application. Add them as links in your resume so potential employers can take a closer look at your work.
5. Master the Job Interview
If your application is well received, you'll be invited to an interview. Nowadays, many of these interviews take place online. It's particularly important to be punctual and prepare for the company. Learn more about its products, technologies, and visions. This shows your commitment and interest.
Tip: "In many cases, you'll also receive a coding challenge during the process to prove your technical skills." This can take place live or asynchronously – so practice both. Your ability to present clean and efficient solutions under time pressure is crucial here.
